Sabzeh(Sprouts)

Aurora Cultural Centre • August 14–October 19, 2025

Sabzeh (Sprouts) was an immersive installation and convergence of sound, movement, fiber arts, and visuals. Sabzeh invited audiences at the Aurora Cultural Centre into a sensorial meditation on growth, resilience, and connection.

Rooted in Persian cultural traditions, Sabzeh featured imagery of growing sprouts, carpets, and tapestries, whose complex patterns reference themes of continuity and collective identity.

Inspired by the short story by Omid Fallahazad, Sabzeh was created by Parisa Sabet and Laura Friedmann, supported by a multidisciplinary team of contributing artists, designers, choreographers, and technicians.

At the heart of Sabzeh stood a large wooden structure hung with hundreds of cords. I knotted them in repeating, wave-like patterns that evoked roots and sprouts growing together. The structure also became a screen: projections of dancers moved through the hanging fibres, their bodies appearing and disappearing among the threads. I created fibre pieces for the dancers to wear, allowing the weaving to move with them as the choreography traced a journey from seed to growth.

Alongside the installation, I created a triptych tapestry that follows that journey in three parts. The first holds the struggle of emergence; the second begins to open into growth; and in the third, the seedlings connect and grow together. Across both works, threads and the spaces between them speak to our fragility, our resilience, and the ways we hold one another up.
